In practice

ROI = (revenue − cost) ÷ cost × 100. Count every cost: platform fees, list acquisition, verification, design and staff time. Revenue must be attributable to the email, which is the hard part when customers also see other channels.

Example

Spend 2,000 and earn 5,000 attributable revenue: ROI is (5,000 − 2,000) ÷ 2,000 = 150%.

Verification and sending

Verification is a cost that usually reduces other costs: fewer bounces, and less spent on platform fees for dead contacts.
