Does verification send an email to the address?
No message is sent to the address you check. The check asks the receiving mail server whether it would accept the recipient and then stops.

What a check does
It reads the address format, looks up the domain’s mail servers and, where the server allows it, asks about the mailbox. No message is delivered and nobody receives anything.
What it cannot do
It cannot prove that the person owns the mailbox. For that, send a confirmation link to the address and wait for a click.
Good to know
Because no message is sent, some servers give no clear answer and the result is unknown or catchall.
