How to confirm an email address

Send a message with a unique link and treat the address as confirmed when the person clicks it. This is double opt-in, and it proves ownership, which no verifier can.

1. Verify first

Check the address when it is entered, so you do not send confirmations to addresses that bounce.

2. Send the link

Use a single-use token that expires, for example after a day, and say plainly what they are confirming.

3. Record it

Store the time and the token. Only mark the address confirmed after the click, and give people an easy way to resend.

Good to know

A click shows a person controls the inbox now. Some security scanners open links automatically, so require a button press on the landing page if that matters to you.
