What does “cleaned” mean in Mailchimp?
A cleaned contact in Mailchimp is an address that hard bounced or repeatedly soft bounced. Mailchimp treats it as invalid, stops sending to it, and does not count it toward your audience limit.

What the cleaned badge means
Mailchimp gives a contact a Cleaned badge in the Email Marketing column when the address is non-deliverable. The address cannot receive future campaigns, and you cannot edit it.
Cleaned contacts do not count toward the monthly contact limit. You can view, export or archive them; Mailchimp recommends archiving rather than deleting so the history stays with the audience.
Why an address was cleaned
A hard bounce is a permanent failure: a typo, an outdated address, a dead domain or a server that rejects the mailbox. Mailchimp says it usually removes hard-bounced addresses from the audience automatically.
Repeated soft bounces, which are temporary failures and can eventually stop being temporary, can also lead to a cleaned status. A valid address can occasionally hard bounce, so a cleaned badge is evidence about the send, not proof that the person never existed.
What to do with cleaned contacts
Archive cleaned contacts to keep their history without mailing them. If the address was a typo, add the corrected address as a new contact; Mailchimp does not charge for the cleaned one because it is outside the audience count.
Do not re-import the same bad address or try to “fix” the cleaned record itself. Export the cleaned list if you need to compare it with your source data.
Avoid new cleaned contacts
Verify addresses before an import so typos, dead domains and disposable addresses are removed first. Keep signup forms accurate and use double opt-in where it fits your list policy.
After a campaign, review bounces and cleaned contacts together; a sudden cluster usually points at a source, a form or a domain problem rather than at individual readers.
Example
A contact is imported as maya@shpo.example.test, but the real address is maya@shop.example.test. The first send hard bounces and Mailchimp cleans the bad address; the corrected address is added separately.
Good to know
Cleaned is Mailchimp’s own status. Another platform may keep the same address, and a verification result describes the address at the time of the check. Cleaning explains past bounces; it does not prove that a corrected address will deliver or that the person wants your mail.
