How to check if an email address is active
No check can see whether a person reads a mailbox. What you can do is confirm the mailbox exists and accepts mail, then use your own engagement data to see who responds.

Confirm the mailbox exists
Verify the address. A valid status means the mailbox accepted the check; invalid means it will bounce.
Look at engagement
Opens are unreliable because mail apps preload images. Clicks, replies and conversions are firmer. Mark contacts with no response over a long period as inactive.
Decide
Send a short re-permission message to inactive but valid contacts, and remove those who do not answer.
Good to know
A valid address that never responds is inactive, not invalid. Verification and engagement answer different questions.
