SSL

Secure Sockets Layer, the old protocol for encrypting connections; today the name is often used for its successor, TLS.

In practice

Real SSL versions are obsolete and insecure. Mail servers now use TLS, either on connect (ports 465 and 993) or by upgrading a plain connection with STARTTLS.

Verification and sending

Not related to verification; it protects the connection between servers.
