Out-of-office reply

An automatic reply sent while the recipient is away.

In practice

It is generated by the recipient’s system, not by a person. Do not answer it, and do not count it as engagement. Mark your own automatic replies as automatic to avoid mail loops.

Verification and sending

An out-of-office reply shows a mailbox exists but not that it is read. Treat it as a temporary note, not as a signal about the address.
