Email validation

Checking that an address is correctly formed.

In practice

Validation in the narrow sense is a format check: one @, a plausible domain, allowed characters. Do not be too strict: plus signs, long domain endings and new top-level domains are all legal. A correctly formed address may still not exist.

Verification and sending

Validation is the first step of verification. Verification goes on to check the domain and the mailbox.
