Email routing

The sending server looks up the recipient domain’s MX records, which list mail servers with a priority number; the lowest number is tried first. Inside an organisation, rules can route mail on to teams or shared inboxes.

A verifier follows the same path: it reads the MX records and asks the first server about the recipient.
