In practice

DNS records on the domain, mainly MX, name the servers that accept its mail. A company domain usually points to a business mail host, while a free-mail domain serves millions of private users.

Example

In ana@northwind.example.test the email domain is northwind.example.test.

Verification and sending

Verification starts with the domain: if it has no mail server, no address on it can receive mail.
