“I hope this email finds you well”: use it or lose it

It is fine in formal first contact and it is empty everywhere else. If you want to open warmly, say something specific, or go straight to the point.

When it works

A formal first message to someone senior or from a culture that expects a greeting.

Better openers

Refer to something real: “Thanks for your talk on Tuesday.” Or be direct: “I’m writing about the Q3 schedule.”

What to avoid

Using it in every message, so it stops meaning anything, and following it with a long preamble before the ask.

Good to know

Tone is cultural. Pick what fits your reader and your relationship.
