IMAP IDLE
An IMAP extension that keeps a connection open so the server can tell the client at once when new mail arrives.

In practice
It is how many apps show new messages without polling. A connection that stays open is closed by some networks after a while, so clients renew it.
Verification and sending
Not related to verification; it is how a client learns about mail already in a mailbox.
