Email forwarding

Passing a received message on to another address, by hand or by an automatic rule.

In practice

Automatic forwarding is set up on the receiving side. It can break SPF checks, because the forwarding server is not the original sender’s server, which is why some systems rewrite the envelope sender or use ARC.

Verification and sending

A forwarding address can hide where mail really ends up, so a successful check on it says nothing about the final mailbox.
