A conversation of related messages that a client groups together.

In practice
Clients link replies using headers such as Message-ID and In-Reply-To, and some also use the subject. Changing the subject can split a thread. Sales follow-ups sent as replies stay in the original thread.
Verification and sending
Not a verification matter; threading is how clients display messages that were delivered.
