SPF

Sender Policy Framework: a DNS record listing the servers allowed to send mail for a domain.

In practice

It is a TXT record. Receivers compare the sending server’s address with the list for the envelope sender’s domain. A record may cause at most ten DNS lookups, and forwarding can break the check.

Verification and sending

SPF covers the sender. It says nothing about whether a recipient address exists.
