Email

A sending server hands the message to the recipient’s mail server, found through the domain’s MX record, which stores it in the mailbox until the person reads it. SMTP carries messages between servers; IMAP or POP lets a client read them.

Whether an address can receive mail depends on that chain: syntax, domain, MX and mailbox. Verification tests each step.
