Apple Mail Privacy Protection (AMPP)

Apple’s Mail privacy feature that hides the reader’s IP address and preloads remote content, so open tracking becomes unreliable.

In practice

Apple calls the feature Mail Privacy Protection (MPP); some vendors shorten it to AMPP. When a reader turns on Protect Mail Activity in Apple Mail, Apple downloads remote content, including tracking pixels, through relays. That can register an “open” even when the reader never opened the message, and it hides the reader’s IP address and exact location.

The feature applies to Apple Mail on iPhone, iPad, Mac and iCloud.com when Protect Mail Activity is on. Other mail apps on the same device are not covered.

Example

A contact with Protect Mail Activity on appears to open a campaign immediately; the open is a preload, not a read.

Verification and sending

Verification is not affected: it checks the address and its mail server, not whether a message was opened. When you report engagement, treat opens from Apple Mail as unreliable and use clicks or replies instead.
